Sudden palpitations, shortness of breath and fear of dying; fear of another attack.
A panic attack is an intense wave of fear that peaks within minutes. The fear of having another attack can narrow daily life as much as the attack itself; the person starts avoiding crowds, public transport or being alone.
In therapy, how an attack arises is explained, controlled exposure to bodily sensations is practised and avoidance behaviours are gradually reduced. In panic disorder the effect of CBT is maintained over the long term.
