Unwanted intrusive thoughts and behaviours repeated to find relief.
Obsessions are disturbing thoughts and images that force their way into the mind; compulsions are repetitive behaviours done to reduce that distress. People often know their thoughts are illogical but cannot stop them.
The most effective method is exposure and response prevention (ERP). A graded fear list is prepared with your therapist and you learn to resist the compulsion. Family involvement is important for children.
